Chinese fishing nets / Vasco da Gama Square

Huge cantilevered nets, lowered and hauled by hand, worked by small teams.

Historic building

Huge cantilevered wooden fishing nets line the waterfront at Vasco da Gama Square. Each is worked by a small team using ropes, stone weights, and a counterbalanced frame: the net is lowered into the water, left for a few minutes, and hauled up again. The catch is often sold beside the nets, making this both a working fishing site and one of Fort Kochi's most recognisable harbour views.
