Kochi's working seaport spreads across Willingdon Island and Vallarpadam in the Vembanad backwaters, near the mouth of the Fort Kochi channel. Cargo ships, container traffic, and cruise vessels all use the port; cruise passengers arrive at the Sagarika terminal. It is an operating harbour rather than a walk-through attraction, but its presence explains the city's long connection to maritime trade.
