When the Dutch took Kochi in 1663 they pulled down almost every Catholic church in the area. They spared St. Francis because they wanted it to pray in — and spared Santa Cruz because they wanted somewhere to keep weapons.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, Fort Cochin
A granite pillar from 1505 stands at its southeastern corner.
Church · Also called Santa Cruz Basilica.
The twin white spires of Santa Cruz Basilica dominate the Fort Kochi skyline. Pope John Paul II elevated the church to basilica status in 1984. A granite pillar from 1505 stands at the southeastern corner, while the interior preserves a relic of the Holy Cross. The building also carries a harder colonial history: after the Dutch captured Kochi in 1663, they spared it and used it as a warehouse for goods including sugar, spices, and iron, with its tower serving as a military flagstaff.
A basilica since 1984, under the decree Constat Sane Templum Sanctae Cruci.
